BW undertook a survey for a week in mid March (Monday 14th -) which closed the lock - no results known yet.
Lately:
NB Charlotte jammed in the lock on April 29th -30th and had to be pulled out by BW staff.
There were three boats in convoy and only one (Huffler) carried on to the head of navigation beyond Kiveton Park, leaving the other two (Jola and Charlotte) below Stret.
The marks left by Charlotte are visible below the waterline just above the bottom gates
Latest:
NB Kano.
On the 13 May (Friday 13th!) NB Kano reached Stret. The crew had phoned BW in advance and they sent MEN!
Morse lock's weir was dammed (2 men)
and water flushed through from above Stret to raise the levels in the pound and Stret itself (2 men). This action reportedly began at 7:30 am.
Water was even being flushed though as far up as Cinderhill lock.
Kano reached Stret at about 11:30 - and stuck!
The pound was allowed to fill until Kano rose above the sticking level about 3 p.m.
Stret lock was closed for over 4 hours!
The two men who had been overseeing at Stret lock then chaperoned Kano up to Shireoaks locks.
Four men were occupied for over 5 hours - at least!
Is this a worthwhile expenditure for BW?
Oh yes! Kano's doing the reverse trip on Monday: Something to wait for!
comment:
There's slots for boards under Sandy Lane bridge ( I don't know what their proper description is - you know, those boards they drop in to shut off bits of the canal), wouldn't it have been quicker to use them and just have twenty or thirty feet of pound to raise rather than the whole half mile or so?
